Susan Johnson, Ph.D

Director of Health Promotion at the Medical University of South Carolina and co-founder of the CHBC

Tell us a little about you.

Susan has been at MUSC for 10 years as a faculty member in the College of Health Professions and Director of Health Promotion. Prior to joining MUSC, she held faculty appointments at Duke, Charleston Southern & The Citadel. She is also founder and CEO of Vimcity, LLC, a worksite wellness firm, and co-founder of the Charleston Healthy Business Challenge. She received her undergraduate degree from UNC Charlotte, master’s degree from The Citadel and Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. In addition to serving as a local, state and national speaker in the area of health promotion, she’s active in supporting health-promoting charities and currently serves as board member for the Bee Cause, the MUSC Arboretum and the Lowcountry Land Trust. She also serves as an appointed member of Trident Technical College Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts Advisory Committee, Citadel School of Science and Mathematics Advisory Council, Lowcountry Land Trust Business Leadership Council, Carolinas Heat Health Coalition, Sustain SC Corporate Membership Network, City of Charleston Wellness Advisory Committee, and chair of the Health in all Polices Task Force. Her work at MUSC has been recognized through multiple prevention awards and publications, both locally and nationally. She currently resides in Mount Pleasant with her younger daughter Georgia who attends Charleston School of the Arts, and when she's home from college in Nashville, her older daughter Ameline and their rescue pup Nash.

Why is CHBC important to you? 

The workplace can be a powerful influencer on personal behaviors and can have a rippling effect on the community. By making health a priority at work, we see changes in employees, in their families and in our communities, creating a collective impact that goes far beyond a single person or institution. I'm honored to be able to serve our business community through this collaborative program by providing resources to support their efforts to create a culture of wellbeing at their workplace and ultimately create a healthier workforce in our great state.

Where is your favorite spot in Charleston?

The beach (preferably away from the crowds on IOP or Kiawah)

What is something still left on your bucket list?

To live somewhere with a big porch and a view of a river, marsh, ocean...
